Obtaining a permit to carry out academic research in Kenya

In campus, you will be required to undertake research that will form part of your thesis/project. For students in Kenyan universities, you will be required to get a NACOSTI permit to do carry out research. This is mainly for research that will involve human subjects. The table below shows the charges for carrying out research in Kenya:

If you need to apply for a NACOSTI permit for academic research here is what you need:

  1. Passport size photo
  2. Scanned ID/Passport
  3. Affiliation letter from relevant local institution for foreigners- Foreign students will need this letter showing that they are students of the institution.
  4. Research proposal- You will upload a complete research proposal clearly showing your intended research and how you are going to go about data collection.
  5. Introductory letter for students- This letter will introduce your research to the respondents and what is required of them to complete the data collection process..
  6. Certificate of ethical clearance of the research – You will need a letter from your education institution showing that you have met the institution ethical requirements and are authorized to proceed with data collection. For graduate and doctoral students, your supervisor in conjunction with other university faculty members may also be required to ascertain that your work is fit for data collection.
  7. Evidence of payment as the last page of the uploaded proposal- You will be required to pay the research licensing fee depending on your type and level of research to the following bank account numbers:

Once you have paid you are required to scan the bank slip and attach it at the last page of your proposal.

The National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation also provide conditions for the license

CONDITIONS

  1. The License is valid for the proposed research, site and specified period.
  2. Both the License and any rights thereunder are non-transferable.
  3. NACOSTI may monitor and evaluate the research.
  4. The Licensee shall report to relevant government offices before commencement.
  5. Excavation, filming and collection of specimens are subject to further permissions from relevant government agencies.
  6. The License does not give authority to transfer research materials.
  7. The Licensee shall submit one hard copy and upload a soft copy of their final report within one year of completion of the research.
  8. NACOSTI reserves the right to modify the conditions of the License including its cancellation without prior notice.

After fulfilling these requirements go to https://research-portal.nacosti.go.ke/signup.html . Once you have signed up you will be presented with an upload area where you can place all your documents. After which your permit should be ready in 15 days and is valid for one year.
